The Collectors: Arthur Evans
Arthur Evans, maverick archaeologist celebrated for his later work in Crete. He was remembered for his restless energy. As an undergraduate he rescued and purchased medieval and later artefacts from workmen engaged in laying out King Edward Street, Oxford. Appointed keeper of the Ashmolean in 1884, he became president of three of the most distinguished academic societies in England. Arthur Evans, about AD 1878
