  • Museum Accession No.: EA1978.644
  • Catalogue No.: 69
  • Object type: Ewer
  • Kiln/Location: Early Enamelled Ware, Arita
  • Period/Date: 1660-80
  • Dimensions: H. 16.5 cm, D. 11.6 cm
  • Provenance: Reitlinger gift
  • Description: Ewer in the form of a tree trunk. Tree with flowering creeper climbing over it modelled in high relief, flowers luted on. Thick hollow handle, tall curving spout. Lid missing. Rough biscuit base flat and unglazed. Red, blue, green and black enamels. The body is loosely decorated to indicate the creeper; moulded flowers are painted in red and blue. Flower and scrolling on handle.

The gilt-metal-mounted example in the Museo Duca di Martina in Naples demonstrates that the lid was pointed, continuing the forward curves of the body (Ambrosio, 1984, no. 1.1). A number of ewers have other shapes, see, for example, the ewer shaped as a Chinese boy sitting on a double-gourd (Toguri, 1991, pl. 189).
