  • Description: Jar and cover. Round-bodied, wide neck and narrow ridged foot. Cover domed with flat everted rim and flattened knob. Three underglaze blue circles at neck and foot of jar. Overglaze enamels in red, yellow, turquoise and blue. Between bands of red, cash pattern at top and ascending flag decoration at foot, body covered with dense design of birds and butterfly among flowers and foliage. Cover, decorated in enamels only, has band of similar flowers.

    It was coloured jars of this type that form the category, the 'Dark polychrome group' suggested by Impey (Impey, 1985).
