Japanese Export Porcelain in the Ashmolean Museum
The Ashmolean Museum is part of the University of Oxford and has a major academic role as well as providing an important source of interest to the population of Oxford and the many tourists who visit the city.

Oliver Impey was a Senior Assistant Keeper in the Department of Eastern Art at the Ashmolean until September, 2003, and recently published a book which catalogues the excellent collection of Japanese export porcelain held at the museum.

The publishers of the book, Hotei Publishing, Amsterdam, have generously allowed us to display on PotWeb a selection of images and text from the book and we hope that visitors to PotWeb will enjoy the selection, learn something of Japanese export porcelain and be encouraged to visit the museum to see these objects in the round and to read the book.

For reasons of copyright, the images are limited in resolution but we have provided enlargements of sections of the pots so that viewers can appreciate better the colour palette and artistry.

PotWeb is in the process of evolution and we should very much value any feedback so that we can improve its content and display.
