- Description: Bowl. Five-petalled brown-edged, rim, deep curving sides, straight circular foot. Kakiemon palette. On inside, two peony trees and smaller flowering plants growing from rocks around empty well. On outside, prunus and bamboo growing from rocks.
There is a marked difference in the quality of the painting on the inside and on the outside of this bowl. That on the inside is superb, as fine as any. That on the outside is pedestrian in the extreme. This argues for a production line even within the enamelling workshop, for the two must be the work of different painters. There is no question of it being a matter of two firings, because the colours of the enamels are identical.
